- Browell salutes by an acre

Allen Browell was pleased to find the winners enclosure on Monday at Kyneton, when My Green Acres saluted for a third career win in the NMIT 0-62 Handicap (1887m).

The son of King Of Prussia whose previous win had been at the track and distance during November of last year, was racing on familiar territory having previously started at the picturesque course on eight occasions for two victories and a further four placings.

Rhys McLeod kept a strong recent partnership intact, having ridden the five-year-old in his latest four outings – only finishing out of the placings once. McLeod deserves credit for his work on My Green Acres, riding a perfect race on the gelding who appeared to be a little one-paced. Under pressure a long way out, McLeod persisted with aggressive riding and the horse responded well, having time to sit up on the line for an easy three-quarter length victory.

The pair went down narrowly at Kilmore recently, in 58 rating company behind the John Blacker prepared Tsar Of Russia. The result was reversed on Monday with Tsar Of Russia finishing fourth, 1¾ lengths behind My Green Acres.

With a small freshen earlier this year, My Green Acres has been a model of consistency through a long preperation, having weighed in at 50% of his races since the beginning of his campaign in October.

Credit goes to the Browell stable who often get their horses performing well over a lengthy campaign.

Stablemate Two Hills was solid from a freshen on a slow track at Sandown recently. Getting caught outside pacemakers, she held her ground well to finish a close-up fourth.

- Verdasco at the ready

Sean Mott is hoping a touch of luck comes his way when stable star Verdasco lines up at Flemington in a listed event on Saturday. The son of Delago Brom has come back in fantastic fettle since a bleeding attack at Stawell in November, with two unlucky placings at metropolitan level.

“The bleeding attack came from left field”.

“We turned him out and I think in the long-run that may have been the turning point in his form reversal this time around,” Mott added.

Last start Verdasco went down in a photo finish at Flemington to Rebel Truce, when unable to obtain a clear run in the home straight.

“Craig Newitt said he had a lap full of horse but we just needed an ounce of luck at an earlier point,” Mott said.

Newitt isn’t able to ride Verdasco, as Stradcome is expected to back up from the Mick Price yard – therefore Glen Boss has been engaged to ride.

The stable has no intention of stepping Verdasco out in trip this campaign and will head towards the All Victorian Sprint Series.

Mott will run talented stablemate Motto’s Gem at Mildura on Sunday. Returning from a lengthy break with a win, she looks to have come back in good order.

-Fine tuning before heading north.

One of Bendigo’s favourites, Anudjawun, will contest the Baden Baden Trophy (2000m) on Saturday at Flemington – in a last minute ‘tune-up’ before a Brisbane Cup assault.

The stayers last run which was a more than creditable fifth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup, will have the blinkers applied again and apprentice Katelyn Mallyon to partner him on Saturday.

“I’ve been happy with all his work since his run in the Cup and I’d be expecting him to be attacking the line come Saturday,” trainer Shaun Dwyer explained.

Although the 2000 metres still appears as a slight query for the dour stayer – Dwyer is confident with some alterations he should be in the finish.

“It’s still a blank page in my mind, whether the trip is too short but you won’t know if you don’t try,” Dwyer explained.

May 10 will see ‘Nudge’ line up in the Brisbane Cup over 2400 metres and a fortnight later he will tackle the Caloundra Cup also over 2400 metres.
